Makalu Barun Region

2 Trips

The Makalu region, located in eastern Nepal’s Sankhuwasabha District, is one of the most remote and ecologically rich landscapes in the Himalayas. Dominated by Mount Makalu (8,485m), the world’s fifth-highest peak, the area spans dramatic elevation ranges from the subtropical Arun Valley to high alpine glaciers. Much of the region lies within the Makalu-Barun National Park, a protected sanctuary known for its pristine forests, rare wildlife such as the red panda and snow leopard, and an extraordinary diversity of plants, including over two dozen species of rhododendron. The landscape features deep river gorges, towering granite cliffs, ancient moraines, and the striking Barun Valley—one of Nepal’s most beautiful glacial corridors. Culturally, the region is home to Rai, Sherpa, and Bhote communities, whose traditions reflect a blend of Kiranti, Tibetan Buddhist, and Hindu influences. Its rugged terrain, minimal infrastructure, and untouched wilderness make Makalu a rare Himalayan frontier.
